According to a 2011 Social Media Flash Poll, a whopping 94% of businesses have felt the negative consequences of poor data protection, ranging from large data loss to a damage to their reputation.

In the last year alone, the staggering costs relating to social media incidents have now topped $4 million (£2.5 million) for a typical company, research found.

Social networks have been said to present a particularly high risk, surrounding accidental sharing of private and confidential information.

Greg Muscarella, director of product management for Symantec's Information Management Group, was quoted as saying that: "Businesses know how important it is to protect and preserve email, IM, spreadsheets and other unstructured information.

"Now they need to recognize that information flowing through social networks is equally important."

Meanwhile Graham Ahearne, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) a technical product manager at Symantec also, recently noted that some security software which is just a few hours out of date may present a data risk to Small to medium sized firms, as well as large ones.
