In recent times we have seen some very high profile security breaches whereby backups haven’t been used or have been misused, and the most annoying thing for the firms in question is that online backup could have saved the day. Recently the computer video game firm Valve was hacked when a backup file was intercepted – however one thing which online backup ensures is a very tiny possibility of this happening. Online backup vendors employ multiple security features, the most important of which being file encryption – some online backup vendors even use the same level encryption as the government use. This encryption is used during both file transfer and file storage, meaning that if anybody did manage to access the file it would be worthless to them. Even governments are not immune to data crisis’s, for example customer data has been stolen, which also could have been prevented by using online backup instead of physical data storage methods. Encrypted online data cannot be stolen, therefore security fears are minimized with online backup, and also data can be lost or destroyed if it is held locally, however an online backup vendor will never lose your data, and the data centers they hold their data in are super-safe.
